The Journey

downwindWe’re planning on taking off from Charleston, South Carolina in the first week of April and cruising down the coast to Key West.  We’ll rest in the Keys for a while and probably meet our crew there, enjoy the clear water and being out of the cold (it may be warmer in South Carolina than most places but still too cold for me!)  We’ll do a big shop, then head west to Isla Majerus — the closest customs and clear in point in Mexico.  It’s about a 400 mile sail, so anywhere from 3 – 5 days depending on the conditions and then cruise from there.  I’d like to stay out of touristy areas so we won’t be going to Cancun, and I’d like to get a little further south and then depending on the weather, how much we’re enjoying the area and the general wims of the people on board we’ll take off for Honduras and meet up with Tom and Karaka.  After that everything is up in the air, but I will be heading further south to Costa Rica and Panama before hurricane season gets going as they’re below the 11 degree line — which means our chances of a hurricane are minimal.

Part of why I love traveling and sailing in particular is the unknown, we’ll go lots of places we didn’t know about before hand and stay for indeterminate amounts of time — no schedules, just outlines.  We’ll have plenty of guide books and cruising guides, but we’ll also use the recommendations of locals and other cruisers to find some special places that are way off the beaten path.
